Database Design: 101

In my line of work, I see a lot of legacy databases. We often tasked with converting them to something more modern. My #1 gripe with some of our junior programs in this task is not converting fields to a more appropriate data type when this takes place. Two examples that I come across often.

Installing a New Thermostat

To my condo has a forced air hot water furance. It’s something of a marvel of technology, being as loud as a possible and all… Anyways, the thermostat that they installed with it is a $20 piece of junk. It’s cut off for turning on and off basically guarrentees this place goes from hot to cold over and over again.  This, was unfortunate. Even more so was that it would startle me awake at night.

Loft: Nearly Complete Update

Well, after a long wait to get in and about a month and a half; my loft is nearly complete. My kitchen is 95% done, waiting on some handles and a new drawer. My bathroom is complete as of yesterday. I bought a washer and dryer at the beginning of the month (after discovering doing laundry at the mat would pay for a washing machine a dryer in a year…). I’ve got 4 light fixtures installed and need to pick and order 4 more ( both bathrooms, dining table light and bar light). I also replaced the crappy analog thermostat with a digital one.

In the near future I hope to get some furniture for the place. Perhaps the big screen tv I was talking about for more than a year? Lamps for all the switched outlets… so it’s not so dark in here at night as well. There’s my whole bedroom do finish doing as well (I got a new bed frame and mattress, but I literally have no where to put clothes). It nearly feels like it’s coming to gather (despite my moments of despair where nothing seems to be going right).

In the far future, I’ll proably paint some walls. That’ll be something of a daunting task, which I may get a professional to do. I was keen on installing cork in the kitchen, but some people seem to think it would break the flow of the place. There is also some planned work for the up stairs bathroom, but I’m in no real hurry to get that done.
